Unreal Conflict

DATE: -0/5-/2004
COMPANY: Epic/Microsoft
PRODUCT: Unreal Championship 2

Unreal Championship II: The Liandri Conflict is the first Unreal game built from the ground up to take advantage of the system.

While Epic was unwilling to reveal too much of the game?s single-player story, they were juiced to showcase the game?s ultra-impressive multiplayer mode. Playable in both split-screen and on Xbox Live, The Liandri Conflict takes the Unreal series into a completely different realm.

Games begin innocently enough by allowing you to choose from 14 playable characters from the Unreal universe. After entering what appears to be a straight-forward FPS, a push of the button quickly switches the game into a third-person mode. This mode is meant to make the game?s melee combat system easier to control. Yes, melee fighting. While you still have access to a number of projectile weapons, like the Bio-rifle and dual pistols, each character also has their own melee weapons for hand-to-hand combat. Weapons also serve a defensive purpose as they allow you to not only deflect shots from other players, but if you?re good enough you can even add a little more damage to them.

Adding another twist to the game?s already addicting online gameplay, each character also has their own strengths and weaknesses in battle. This includes special moves that are unique to each. These include things like wall-jumps and dash moves (that let you quickly close the gap between distances). Characters are limited to carrying four guns, which are selected before going into battle. You can also pick up guns dropped by enemies. However, weapon selection requires a bit of planning because not every gun is efficient in the hands of every character.

Xbox Live multiplayer matches will allow up to 8 players to take part in combat. The game will also offer 50 maps and the usual multiplayer modes.

Unreal Championship 2: The Liandri Conflict ships this Winter.
