Castlevania producer Koji Igarashi is at it again with Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin. Much like its five most recent 2D predecessors, Symphony of the Night through Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin adopts a semi-open ended gameplay style similar to Metroid. Players will be able to explore a non-linear game world, fighting enemies, defeating bosses, and acquiring new skills that will unlock new areas.

Most people found the gameplay old and stale with the release of Dawn of Sorrow. I was more forgiving, only now do I feel the gameplay is getting old and stale. While it isn’t finished, they will have to do some pretty interesting things to reinvigorate this gameplay to the point of being compelling. Sure, the game is set in a strange era, World War II, and the game features a unique tag-team style gameplay that we only saw briefly in the extra mode of Dawn of Sorrow, but I’m not sure it will be enough.

Portrait of Ruin will be coming out for the Nintendo DS sometime in 2006.
