The US hasn’t seen much of the Super Robot Taisen series, even though it has been around for quite awhile in Japan. The game, which is a turn-based RPG similar to Fire Emblem, features a collection of well-known robots from several series, some familiar to US audiences (Gundam, Macross, Evangelion) while others aren’t. Unfortunately, many of the licensed games won’t make an appearance in the US version – though all of the deep strategy will come over intact.

The game’s plot follows the same theme as other games in the series. A threat is coming from somewhere in space and you, as a young pilot, must lead an army of mechs to meet the threat head-on.

Gameplay plays out similar to Fire Emblem or Advance Wars. Both armies are on a grid-based map and take turns making moves. When a robot comes within attack range of another, the game breaks into a side-view of combat. Basically, this is your standard strategy RPG, only with big robots.

Another cool aspect is that you can customize your army with new parts, granting both stat boosts and new abilities. This allows you to build your army based on your own play style rather than having to adapt a series of robots who may not fit with your plans.

Even though the series' signature collection of robots won’t make it over to the US, strategy RPG fans should have a lot to look forward to once the game hits later this summer.
