Over the past few years, Snowblind Studios has built itself a reputation as being a top-notch developer of action RPGs, including Champions of Norrath and Dark Alliance. Now the super studio is turning its isometric sights on superheroes with a new entry, Justice League Heroes.

At the offset, Justice League Heroes looks like many other Snowblind games, only with Superman and Batman rather than dwarves and elves. In the game, you’ll take one of seven core JLA members (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter, Green Lantern, Flash, and Zantanna) through city streets and out into space. Snowblind is still not ready to tell the entire story, but the game begins shortly after a mysterious meteoroid crashes on Earth. What makes this meteoroid different from any other is that it begins to call out to the super-intelligent Braniac. After making contact with it, Braniac is promised unlimited knowledge in return for a small favor.

For the most part, Justice League Heroes will find you bashing all manner of evil henchmen like robots and aliens. Each character has the standard array of punches and kicks as well as an arsenal of hero-specific moves. Each move will, of course, fall in line with each character’s powers in the comics, so you can expect Superman to use his heat-vision and flight while in battle, whereas Batman will have a number of “wonderful toys” at his disposal. Special attacks will have to be unlocked as the game progresses, though you can expect each to have basic versions of their signature powers from the start.

As characters gain experience points, both their stats and powers will also improve. In another interesting twist, defeated enemies won’t drop loot items. Instead, they’ll drop special orbs that can be assigned to powers. So, while you may not be equipping Superman with a Lightening Mace of Undead Smiting, you will be able to pump up his punching power, allowing him to do more damage with each hit. In addition, these orbs can also be combined to create new orbs, unlocking even more upgrades.

In addition to unlocking new powers and upgrades, you’ll also be able to unlock other heroes from the JLA’s lengthy roster. Snowblind isn’t revealing who all of these characters are, though they did announce that Green Arrow would show up as an unlockable character. Alternate costumes for heroes are also planned.

Justice League Heroes is slated for release later this year on the PS2, Xbox and the PSP.
