Ratchet & Clank have come a long way since the game’s debut back in 2002. Back then it was seen as little more than another platformer with a lot of gadgets and weapons. Little did anyone know that the game would set the benchmark for platformers. Since then, the duo has starred in three games and always managed to up the ante with each release. Now the duo has set its sights on the PSP with Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters.

After dealing with planet-stealing corporations, rampaging pets, death matches and Captain Quark, the duo is ready for some rest and relaxation on one of the galaxy’s most peaceful planets. What could go wrong?

While relaxing on the beach, a young girl named Luna notices Ratchet and Clank and asks them to be the subject of a project she’s working on for school. Not one to turn down a fan (or a chance to be the center of attention), Ratchet agrees. Half-way through the project, calamity strikes and Luna is kidnapped by aliens, spurring the two into action. The kidnapping soon gives way to a much larger plot, sending Ratchet and Clank on another galaxy-spanning adventure.

Size Matters is a return to roots for the series. Unlike Deadlocked, Size Matters will play like the previous three games in the series. Most of your time will be spent playing as Ratchet, though you will be able to play as Clank in a few areas. The series’ trademark weapons and gadgets will, of course, return as well. The total number of weapons hasn’t been revealed, though you can expect to see a few new weapons as well as some old favorites and something involving farm animals. You’ll also be able to level up Ratchet’s health, though the system will be slightly scaled back.

One of the more surprising things about Size Matters is that the series' developer, Insomniac Games, has passed development over to High Impact Games. Rest assured that the game is in capable hands since the studio is made up of several ex-members of Insomniac, many of which worked on previous games in the series.

Visually, Size Matters is looking every bit as good as the console versions of the game, once again demonstrating just how powerful the PSP really is.

Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters hits the PSP early next year.
