Midway had two new Mortal Kombat games to show off at E3 this year. One was for the Xbox and PS2, while the other is the series' first leap to the PSP.

Mortal Kombat: Armageddon (the console game) takes the series in an all new direction. With the ability to not only create your own fighters, but also your own fatalities, Armageddon is definitely trying to pull in some RPG elements in a hopes to bring in a new audience. Armageddon is still a fighter at heart, but you will also have access to a world between battles. This world is in your standard third-person action format and this is where the game's actual story will be developed. This new direction seems to be an attempt to inject a real story into a fighter instead of just the typical "enter a tournament to save the world" excuse previous games have used.

This story mode is an expansion and evolution of the Konquest Mode found in previous games. Now the new adventure will have your character searching for his long lost father.

Also improving trends from previous versions of the MK line, you will be able to fight opponents online by either choosing one of the 50+ characters or your custom fighter.

Meanwhile, Mortal Kombat: Unchained for the PSP harks back to what made the Mortal Kombat series the hit that it is. This game is mostly just simple "go in there and beat your opponent to a pulp" type of stuff. Unchained features six all new exclusive characters.

MK: Unchained does feature a few added modes like mini-games and the Konquest mode, but most of the game focuses on the fights themselves.

Both Unchained and Armageddon will hit the shelves this Fall.
