Of everything being shown for the Wii the one game that seemingly everyone has wondered about is the next iteration of the wildly popular Super Smash Brothers series, which to this day still has people playing and trying to unlock its multitude of secrets. When Nintendo announced that a new Smash Brothers game would indeed find its way to the Wii, many expected it to be in playable form at this year’s E3. Much to the dismay of many, the game was nowhere to be seen at either Nintendo’s press conference or on the show floor – until yesterday when, in a surprise announcement, Nintendo unveiled Super Smash Brothers Brawl for Wii.

The official teaser trailer began with series regulars Mario, Link, Kirby and Pikachu battling it out in yet another Smash Brothers Brawl across several familiar locations. Before brawling, the four showed off their new graphical looks (for example, Link uses his Twilight Princess look) as well as a series of new moves which included a nasty looking multi-sword strike attack from Link and a powerful fireball attack from Mario.

As the melee continued, the trio was joined by a set of new brawlers, all making their first appearance in the game. The first to pop out was Kirby’s nemesis, Meta Knight, who soon jumping into the fray with a series of vicious sword attacks. He was soon interrupted by Pit (of Kid Icarus fame) who began with a volley of arrows and then switched to a double-bladed melee attack. As the two battled, series veteran Samus ran in, though she was dressed in her slinky, blue suit from Metroid Zero Mission rather than the power suit. Finally, Wario came riding in, only to crash his motorcycle and unleash a rather crude, and powerful, gas attack that cleared the screen.

Then something odd happened.

Unexpectedly, the trailer then switched to a Codec screen from Metal Gear Solid. Snake then appeared speaking to Campbell, who informed Snake that he would be in the next Smash Brothers game. The trailer then cut to show Snake, hidden under a cardboard box, sneaking into the area where the brawl was taking place.

With that, the title Super Smash Brothers Brawl flashed across the screen with a release date of Early 2007. So, while the game may not make the Wii launch later this year, it should see a release early on in the Wii’s launch window. As for how the game will use the Wii’s motion-based control, Nintendo is still being secretive. The company is also keeping the rest of the game’s cast under wraps as well, but fans can expect to see several new members join the already long list of characters.

Look for Super Smash Brothers Brawl early next year.
