Fans of ABC’s wildly popular Desperate Housewives will get even more antics from the girls of Wisteria Lane later this year with the release of Desperate Housewives: The Game for the PC.
I already know what you’re thinking, because I was thinking it too. Exactly how does a show like Desperate Housewives fit into a game? Well, think The Sims only with some backstabbing and deceit and you’re not that far off. You play the role of a new housewife who has just moved into the neighborhood. The game’s story, which was written by one of the show’s writers, is set somewhere towards the beginning of the first season, so it shouldn’t tie into or even retread plot elements from the show, making it a completely new experience for fans of the show (or newcomers).
For the most part, the game will play out like The Sims, only with a little more action and less menial management tasks. You’ll spend a good deal of time building relationships with the other women. Through your conversations you might come up with tasks that you must complete. You won’t be able to be everyone’s friend all the time, so you’ll find yourself building and breaking relationships throughout the game. Relationships are built through a series of skills that will help you navigate through Wisteria Lane's rough waters. For example, you might be caught in a situation that requires smooth talking. If you have a high enough composure skill, you can bluff your way out of it. Otherwise, you’ll find yourself in a sticky situation.
While the game won’t revolve around everyday management tasks, you will have to complete them. Many of these tasks will take place as mini-games, such as a cooking mini-game when you need to eat or gardening mini-game when you need to keep up the yard. But, if you’d rather just have fun with the girls you can hire a gardener or order take-out if you have enough money.
Money will also play an important role in the game. In addition to paying people to do certain tasks for you, you’ll also be able to buy things like clothes and new hairstyles which will help when completing some of the game’s tasks (besides, a housewife always wants to look her best, right?). Each week you’ll get a weekly allowance from your husband, but you can supplement your cash flow through weekly poker games or by selling things at the pawn shop. What might you pawn? Try selling off some of the goodies you can swipe from someone's house!
While games tied to popular TV shows are inevitable, it is rare that the game is able to capture what makes the show so popular or be any fun. So far it seems like Desperate Housewives: The Game is headed in the right direction, so fans will want to keep an eye on this one. |
