We haven’t seen much of the Persona series in the last few years, but Atlus is rolling out the third installment of the series on the PS2 later this year.

Aside from its deep, tactical combat, story has been one of the series' strongest suits – even if it only makes complete sense to a handful of loyal fans. Not a lot is known about the third game’s plot other than you take the role of a skinny high school student who is a bit of a loner. His only friends are a cocky boy and a pretty, quiet girl. As with other games in the series, you will have to battle demons while balancing life as a teenager in high school.

Persona 3 will revolve around an active day/night cycle. During the day, your major concerns will be the everyday life of a teenager, while at night every manner of freak and demon will come out. Who knew life as a teenager in Japan was so rough?

Combat is turn-based, though you’ll only have direct control over the main character. You will be able to suggest actions to other characters, but for the most part, they will work on their own. You can even split the group up while in dungeons, which should add an interesting exploration element.

Getting back to combat, you can either attack demons with normal weapons like swords and guns, as well as special attacks. While using special attacks, you’ll have a chance to knock down enemies. Doing so will allow you to gang-up on the helpless victim. If those don’t work, you can unleash your persona, a demon that has bonded to your soul. Certain battles will even allow you to unlock new personas, as well as allowing you to combine personas together to form new personas.

Persona 3 is shaping up to be one of the RPGs everyone should keep an eye on. The US release date hasn’t been made official, though the game should come out later this year in Japan.
