Karaoke Revolution - Watch Out!

Already a smash hit on the PS2 in Europe, SCEA is bringing the karaoke simulation SingStar stateside to the PS3. With a catalog of 350 songs to choose from, ranging from a variety of genres such as classic, pop and urban, this one is sure to please fans of the Karaoke Revolution series. Although the interface is very different and takes some getting used to for those most familiar with Karaoke Revolution, the sheer number of songs available is quite a draw.

You can play a solo game or opt for Party mode, where you can battle it out with a friend or sing a duet. The interface is very interesting. Static bars appear across the screen and fill as you sing. It appears to show you where your voice is hitting, if you aren't getting the pitch just right. Points accumulate as you match the pitch correctly and sing the song well. The words are shown along the bottom of the screen, one bar at a time with the next bar grayed out below to prepare you. Again, if you are used to your words scrolling along the bottom of the screen, you'll take some time getting used to this new way.

Among songs we saw in the SingStar demo, there was "Stacey's Mom" by Fountains of Wayne, "Take Me Out" by Franz Ferdinand, "I Believe in a Thing Called Love" by The Darkness, "Video Killed the Radio Star" by The Buggles and many, many more.

You'll also be able to utilize your Eye-Toy to record performances of yourself and post them on the net for bragging rights.

SingStar promises to be a great party game and with the availability to download a catalog of 350 songs, who could ask for more? Only time will tell how much it will cost per song, but for those of you who like to be center stage belting out your favorite tunes, this was tailor-made for you.
