Thus far the two PSP versions of Metal Gear Solid haven’t been what many fans would consider “real” versions of the game. Instead, portable iterations have been odd strategy-card game hybrids that were popular with a select handful of players. However, fans wanting a “real” MGS experience won’t have to wait long for portable stealth action as Konami is readying Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops for release later this year.

Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops will continue the storyline from last year’s MGS 3: Snake Eater. Set a few years after the third game, players will once again play as Snake (or Big Boss rather) as he dodges FOX unit operatives hunting him down after he has been falsely accused of treason.

Visually, Portable Ops lives up to the high standards set by previous games. Expect visuals that look up to par with the PS2 version. A few cast members from Snake Eater will make a return, including Eva. New characters are also being added, including a new FOX agent.

In addition to a truer MGS experience, Portable Ops will also feature both Ad Hoc and Infrastructure multiplayer modes. As with most things Metal Gear, Konami isn’t saying much about what players should expect from Portable Ops’s multiplayer modes, though a quick look at MSG 3: Subsistence would be a good place to start.

It has been a while in the making, but Metal Gear is finally making it to the PSP. Look for more details in the coming months leading up to the game’s release later this year.
