Social networking is all the rage these days and is working its way into gaming. The “majors” have already staked their claim for gaming networks with Xbox Live and PlayStation Home. Next year, Disney will launch its own service with DGamer.

DGamer is Disney’s run at a social network for DS gamers. Using the DS’s WiFi Connection, DGamer will let players create their own virtual avatars and includes many of the same features found on Xbox Live, along with the ability for users to add their own personal touch. As players play the games, they’ll unlock special content by completing in-game challenges. The unlocked content will include costumes, wallpaper and other items for their online profiles. These upgrades will be viewable on their DS or by logging into the DGamer website.

The first games to feature the service will be the recently announced Spectrobes II, Hannah Montana and the DS version of The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. The service will be included in all future Disney games for the DS once the service is launched.
