Mega Man Star Force is something of a successor to the NT series. The game plays similar to the NT series and has you playing as a human boy, Geo, in the real world and taking on the persona of Mega Man in “Wave World,” which is a cyber world similar to the internet that you can actually walk through to access info rather than having to rely on your web browser.

As you roam through the cyber world, you’ll encounter several viruses that are reminiscent of classic Mega Man enemies. Battles play out in typical RPG fashion; you hit a random encounter and launch into a battle screen. When in combat, you enter a three-by-five grid of squares. Unlike the NT games, you will watch battles from behind Mega Man rather than from the side. Other than the change in perspective, everything is pretty much the same. You are confined to a certain set of squares and use various abilities as you try and dispatch of the enemies.

Battle pacing is managed by a meter that slowly fills up. Once filled, you can use from a set of selected abilities that are used, restarting the process. As you wait for the meter to refill, you can use your standard blaster to inflict minimal amounts of damage or move between the squares you control and avoid incoming attacks.

Mega Man can only use a certain number of abilities in battle; however he can add members to his network and gain use of their abilities as well. Furthermore, if multiple members of his network have the same skill, it will become stronger.

Mega Man Star Force will come in three different versions: Dragon, Leo and Pegasus. All three will share the same story and mechanics. The differences come in later; each version will feature special abilities that will be unique to that game. You’ll be able to link up with other players wirelessly to share abilities with other versions or battle it out in head-to-head matches.

Although it doesn’t change too much, Mega Man Star Force still looks like an interesting game for fans of the NT series or anyone who enjoys RPGs of the Pokemon variety.

All three versions of Mega Man Star Force hit shelves in August.
