Mega Man ZX Advent is the second side-scrolling Mega Man to appear on the DS. Although the game looks like more of the same on the surface, Capcom has gone through and rewired a few things, making for smoother running and overall improved experience.

Advent takes place a few years after the first game. Reploids and humans have enjoyed a peaceful coexistence, though a war between to two threatens to disrupt that harmony. Playing as either Grey (the male character) or Ashe (the female character), it’s your job to try and stop war from happening. Each character has a different backstory that will show up throughout the game and influence some of the dialogue and plot twists – giving the game a little more replay value that the original.

From a gameplay standpoint, Advent plays out much like the first. You are charged with protecting a biometal shipment. Biometal is a substance that can merge with humans and transform them into Pseudoroids. Different biometals grant different abilities, which you need to collect over the course of the game. In-game, these forms are similar to the various boss powers in the original NES (and SNES) series. After the shipment goes awry, your character merges with the biometal and turns into Mega Man Model A. This form plays much like any other Mega Man, only with a new ability that allows him to lock onto multiple targets.

Another of Model A’s features is that he can copy the data of other bosses. Copying data from a boss will allow you to turn into that boss for a short period of time and use his abilities. These abilities will come in handy later in the game when you have to bypass certain obstacles.

Level designs have been tweaked in Advent and are bigger than the previous game. However, for anyone who found themselves constantly becoming lost in the first game, a mini-map is displayed on the bottom screen. Advent will offer both co-op and head-to-head multiplayer for players who each have the game. In addition, it will also support a single-card mini-game.

Visually, Advent retains the same look and feel of the first DS game. The game will boast more animated sequences and, unlike the first, will feature English voice clips in-game.

Mega Man ZX Advent ships this October.
