In Barker Hanger, it wasn't just entertainment technology that had kiosks to show off their latest products. One such group posed the possibility of using gaming technology for the pursuit of research and education.

The Serious Games Initiative was founded at the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars in Washington, D.C. This Initiative has noted and expanded upon the use of certain games in more than just an entertainment use. Games that the group has examined include SimCity, Civilization and Hidden Agenda. These titles have already been used in universities around the country for less than traditional educational purposes.

The Serious Games Initiative has created several offshoots that specialize in certain areas. These fields include Games for Health, Games for Change and CMP's Serious Games Summit (which will be next held at GDC 2008).
