One of the many announcements made by Nintendo at their press conference was the introduction of a zapper attachment for the Wii. The shell, which will retail for $20, houses the Nunchuk and Wii-mote, turning it into what resembles a machine gun. One of the first games to support the attachment will be Capcom’s Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles.

Announced last year, RE: Umbrella Chronicles is an on-rails shooter featuring characters and events from Resident Evils 0 – 3 while also throwing in a few story elements showing the fall of the Umbrella Corporation. The game will take place in various familiar settings, including the mansion from RE1 and the streets of Raccoon City during RE3.

Gameplay is pretty easy to figure out. The Wii-mote controls your on-screen crosshair as you blast away hordes of zombies that lumber towards you. Once you clear out an area, you’ll move on to the next one. The analog stick is used to look around, though movement is completely controlled by the game. The analog stick can also be used to target off-screen enemies. As you pick your way through the game’s level, your primary weapon is a pistol, though you’ll be able to pick up shotguns and machine guns. You can also use your knife when enemies get close by swinging the zapper.

At certain points in the game, you’ll come across timed action sequences where you need to press buttons when prompted by on-screen cues.

The idea of a light gun-based Resident Evil is probably enough to conjure memories of Resident Evil: Dead Aim. However, based on early information it looks like Capcom is doing everything it can to steer Umbrella Chronicles away from Dead Aim's pitfalls. Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles hits this November.
