Final Fantasy X Impression: Gorgeous!
The SquareSoft booth had a playable version of their upcoming Final Fantasy X, and while the machines were always crowded with people playing them, I managed to slip in a quick play-through of one of the two demo areas. And, from what I've seen, FFX is on the top of my list for 'RPGs to Watch on the PS2'.
The first thing that you'll notice when you're playing is the lack of pre-rendered backgrounds in the game. Instead, Final Fantasy X uses a fully-3D world engine, allowing you to roam around and see the beauty of the game for yourself. And it is gorgeous; FFX is easily the most graphically splendid game I've seen for the PS2. The game is similarly impressive once battle is started. You still have the traditional row of characters--three, this time--but there are some nice changes in the gameplay. For example, you can cycle out a character in the middle of battle, which is a boon when you get into a fight that your current party just doesn't work with. And Yuna's summons are just as gorgeous, over-the-top and breathtaking as you imagined they would be.
With gorgeous graphics and solid gameplay, we only wait to see if Final Fantasy X has the staying power needed for the next wave of PS2 games. Knowing how much Square needs their flagship series to be, well, a flagship, I have strong hopes for FFX, and can't wait to see more of the game.
