Elebits was, at least for me, the first game that really showed the types of things the Wii’s motion-based controls could do for a game. Under the guise of what appeared to be an on-rails shooter, the game had you hunting down Elebits with your Wii-mote controlled zapper. In order to ferret the tiny energy gremlins out of their hiding spots, you used the zapper to pick up objects and manipulate then around in a 3D space. Now Konami is bringing that same concept to the DS with Elebits: The Adventures of Kai and Zero.

As Kai, you and your pal Zero stumble across an old bus that just happens to also be a time machine. Curiosity gets the better of the two and after a series of unfortunate events, they are transported to a new world. The only way for the duo to return home is by collecting omega Elebits.

Although the original game was more of a shooter, the DS version is an overhead puzzle-based game. The object of each area is to collect as many Elebits as you can, which is performed by tapping the touch screen to manipulate objects in the environment. You can tap trees to shake them or move rocks, sending the little guys scurrying. Once in the open, Zero can capture them. As with the first game, Elebits can be anywhere, so you’ll also have to figure out ways to reach out of the way places. This is done by using each Elebit’s special powers. For instance, some can freeze water while others can provide light in dark areas.

The single-player game is joined by a Wi-Fi multiplayer mode where up to four players can compete in a head-to-head Elebits capture battle.

Look for Elebits: The Adventures of Kai and Zero later this year.
