At E3 2009, KOEI was showing Monster Racers for the Nintendo DS. A casual glance at my list of reviews will reveal that I'm not a big Nintendo DS player... and that I'm not the biggest Mario or Sonic fan. However, Monster Racers had a bit of a retro feel to it that made it interesting and fun...

Monster Racers combines elements of games such as Pokemon, where you have to collect and raise monsters, with a side-scrolling racing game that feels much like a Mario or Sonic game from years gone by, with different levels of terrain, gaps to jump over or avoid and power-ups to speed you up. I've played foot-race games before and found them to make about as much sense as a first person shooter without ammunition, but the side-scroller format of Monster Racers makes the idea work for me.

Up to four players can race together using Wireless DS Single-Card Download Play and Wireless Multi-Card Play. This product is rated "E" (Everyone) by the ESRB and ships on August 25, 2009.
