Up-Close FPS Seeks Modern RTS for Fun, Maybe More

Southpeak's Raven Squad looks to be a perfect pairing of FPS action and RTS strategy. Raven Squad lets you plan your military strikes while observing a map from above, then swoop down into the game to assume the role of a member of the squad. Moving from first person (FPS) view to third person (RTS) view is instant, while there is a brief dynamic "fly-in" animation that does a good job of helping you keep track of where you are in relation to the map as you zoom in. When zooming into first person mode, you "fly-in" to a single selected character, but you can switch between different unique soldiers, each with their own distinct skills, backgrounds and character.

Raven Squad places your squads in the jungles of the Amazon, where you must fight the enemy and save hostages, if you can. If you're alone, you can take the enemy on single-handed, but Raven Squad also features a two-player co-operative mode, where each player controls one squad of three soldiers. Either way, the game enforces a code of "leave no soldier behind," forcing you to rescue your fallen soldiers. If a soldier is lost, so is the mission.

Raven Squad is to be released for the Xbox 360 and Windows in Fall of 2009.
