With the upcoming Astro Boy movie to hit theaters soon, it's no surprise that there will be a game to accompany it. And it looks like the development efforts at High Voltage and Art Co Ltd are taking a classic approach to the classic license.

Astro Boy's new game will have two different types of levels to play through. The first and most prominent is the standard action-platformer levels done in side-scroller fashion where you run from room to room taking out waves of enemies with Astro Boy's various weapons.

While facing tons of robotic henchmen, I was able to use many of Astro Boy's odd weapons. Everything from his Finger Laser to his Arm Cannon, Drill Attack and even his unique Butt Machine Gun were at my disposal.

The enemies themselves were fairly entertaining as I was assaulted by various themed bots. Some are styled after classic 1920's gangsters, while others have 50's greaser look (almost like Elvis). But the 3D side-scrolling platformer isn't the only style of gameplay Astro Boy has to offer.

Some levels had me flying around the skies over the city shooting down other types of robots and avoiding mines in a top-down shooter style that is reminiscent of R-Type or Galaga.

It is obvious that the developers wanted to make a game that was very approachable by both the young kids that the movie is aimed towards and their parents who might remember Astro Boy from his classic anime or played games from that era.

Astro Boy is scheduled to release around the same time as its movie counterpart this October. The Wii, PS2 and PSP versions of this game are being developed by High Voltage, while Art Co is working on the DS version.
