Zombies are everywhere it seems, especially in games. Whereas most games charge you with fighting against the undead masses, Tecmo’s Undead Knights let’s you fight with them… literally.

Undead Knights, an upcoming PSP title, combines hack-n-slash gameplay, zombies and heavy metal in what was easily one of the more unique games on the show floor. Very little background information was given for the story beyond a simple quest for revenge. On the eve of his wedding, a knight and his family are killed. Rather than stay dead, the knight and two other members of his family (his wife and another male, thief-like character) are given the chance to seek redemption. Part of the deal is the ability to turn enemies into zombies, which you can then toss at enemies as weapons.

Gameplay follows a typical hack-n-slash formula. Playing as one of the three characters, you wade through armies of enemies. On the surface, the game is reminiscent of Overlord, but without the minions. Instead you can grab nearly dead enemies and transform them into zombies. Once transformed, you can toss enemies at other enemies as projectiles or send them to engage incoming groups using the D-pad.

At one point in the demo, the knight tossed zombies at a giant enemy. The zombies then attached themselves to the giant and proceeded to gnaw on his flesh, weakening him. At this point, you can move in for the killing blow or transform the giant into a big zombie. Only two types of zombies were on display, but the Tecmo rep said the final release would include more types.

Zombies are also useful for solving puzzles. At different parts in the game, you’ll come across barriers that require a set number of zombies to pass. During the demo, the knight needed to collect a certain number of zombies to tear down a door.

Undead Knights will ship later this year.
