A Brand New Yoo

Last year I was introduced to Yoostar and instantly fell in love with the concept. I love movies, digital FX and social games – it was a perfect fit. However, it was also a hassle. Inserting you and your closest friends into movie clips was a blast, but it was a pain to set up. Put up the green screen, hook up the camera to a computer, run the software… By the time everything was ready, most of the excitement was generally gone.

Apparently the people at Yoostar thought the same thing or, at the very least, thought the process could be streamlined. Both Sony and Microsoft’s forays into the motion game seem to be just the catalyst the company needed. Yoostar2 is a completely reworked version of the original. Rather than ship as a standalone product with its own bits and pieces, Yoostar2 was developed specifically for the Xbox 360 and PS3’s new motion controllers.

Despite the platform jump, Yoostar2 is based on the same concept as the previous game. Players choose a film clip from a library of titles including classics like Terminator and Forrest Gump, as well as newer films like Kick-Ass and The Hangover. Next, they line up to an outline on the screen to make sure they will fit in frame once the clip starts. Lines scroll through at the top of the screen similar to a Karaoke machine.

Once the clip is over, performances are scored and points are awarded. Accuracy is important, though other game modes encourage and improve moments, so there’s something for nearly every actor in your life. Players can also share their performances on Social Networking sites like YouTube, Facebook or the game’s official website.

As with 3D gaming, I came to E3 unsure of what I thought of “motion gaming.” I can honestly say Yoostar2 has pushed me closer to purchasing either a Kinect or Move controller than other games available on the show floor.

Look for a release date soon and in the meantime, start brushing up on your acting skills.
