The Next Battleground

MMA is the new “battleground sport." In addition to the already-released UFC Undisputed, two other companies showed off their MMA games at E3. Though it might be easy to look at the lot and see no real difference (as is the case in NBA/ NHL games), EA’s MMA entry, EA Sports MMA is a much different game.

The key difference between EA’s offering and others is the control scheme. Rather than go for something more technical and precise, such as Undisputed’s scheme, EA Sports MMA goes for faster-paced play. The scheme is nearly identical to EA’s Fight Night series. Strikes are mapped to the Right Analog Stick. Depending on how you manipulate the stick (quarter rolls, quick snaps,…) your fighter will perform different types of hits. Pressing the shoulder buttons alongside stick movements further augments strikes. Hitting (L2) causes your fighter to kick, while (L1) offers up feints. Pressing (R2) targets the body. I was a big fan of Fight Night, so the scheme’s implementation in MMA is a welcome, and comfortable, entry. During my hands-on time, I was able to develop a number of intricate punch/ kick combos within a matter of minutes.

I won’t go so far as to say the scheme is better than Undisputed. Undisputed does what it does incredibly well. MMA’s scheme just feels a little more fluid and presents a completely different approach towards fighting mechanics.

The one aspect I really enjoyed about MMA is the grapple system. The actual mechanics aren’t much more than button mashes tied in with a stamina meter. However, pulling off counters and blocks is incredibly easy. Every time your opponent attempts to lock in or maneuver into position, your controller offers a short vibration. If you can hit a button in time with the buzz (and have enough stamina), the move is countered. The window of opportunity is narrow, though it’s great for casual MMA fans, like me, who aren’t as in tune with how to read transitions.

EA Sports MMA hits stores this October.
