Konami Adrenalin Misfits

Konami wins a Quirky Title award with this one, but it's an accurate depiction of what takes place in the game. Adrenalin Misfits is all about extreme sports and pushing the envelope, which is a great concept for an Xbox 360 equipped with Kinect. This is the kind of game that will make you appreciate having a Kinect, and a great way to demonstrate the power of the technology. Combining action sports with physical exercise and some party action is great in concept, and Konami has executed well, based on what we saw. Take at least seven unique events set in seven unique worlds, multiply by however many friends you can invite over to make fools of themselves in the comfort and safety of your living room, and you have Adrenalin Misfits in a nutshell.

The event we tried out was a snowboarding race, available with several options that ranged from freestyle to slalom competitions, played with some kind of monster avatar. Using the Kinect, you'll step into what the system considers its "scanning area" so it can calibrate on your shape and size. After this, you simply launch the game, facing the screen. During the race, your character brakes by standing sideways against the slope of the hill, so when the whistle blows, you'll need to turn 90-degrees and crouch down to get the board moving at a fair clip. Leaning will turn the board, just as it does on a real slope, and you can also lean back or forward to change speed. Jumping will jump the board on-screen, and you can kick to perform a kick-flip move. If it sounds too good to be true, we're here to tell you it worked, and damn well. The acrobatics required for the game may not appeal to the couch potatoes out there, but these new motion systems like Kinect are really made for people that want to get up off the couch, anyway.

Adrenalin Misfits made for both a great tech demo and an example of Konami ingenuity. Just using motion in a sports game is one thing, but having lots of fun with it in a fantasy setting requires well thought-out game design and production. We liked what we saw in Adrenalin Misfits, and there's no doubt that if all the events play as well at launch as the snowboarding race, there'll be some wild times in the living room when this lands following Microsoft's Kinect launch.
