Quantum Theory seems to be Tecmo's attempt to fill a void that has existed in the Eastern game space for a very long time. It's a third-person cover shooter with a number of interesting mechanics. Think Gears of War with Japanese sensibilities, and you've got a pretty good idea of what Quantum Theory is all about.

The game takes place in the future. The world's in bad shape; civilization has all but ended and is being replaced by the "living towers" that are sprouting out of the ground. The towers have become afflicted by a mysterious corrupting growth, which causes the organic structures to mutate and change without warning. Furthermore, the towers are under attack by the Gilskin, a group of corrupted beings. As a warrior named Syd, your job is to rid the world of the corruption by bringing the towers down. However, you've got a partner in this fight: a young woman named Filena, who seems to be tied to the Nosferatu, the tower guardians. The role of the Nosferatu is to wipe out the Gilskin and protect the towers. How will this dynamic play out in the narrative? It's a bit too soon to tell.

At first, Quantum Theory seems indistinguishable from its main sources of inspiration. As Syd, you hurl yourself into and out of cover, blasting abominations with weapons that can only be described as organic. If Syd gets close enough, he can forgo the guns and deliver a powerful melee attack. However, his ace in the hole is Filena, a mysterious young woman. The reason she's his ace in the hole is an odd one. If Syd is pinned down by weapons fire and needs to get away from his current position, he can pick up Filena and throw her at his enemies. He can settle for a straight throw, but he can also lob her skyward. If your aim is true and Filena hits her mark, that's usually the end of it for the poor beast.

It's difficult to tell whether or not Quantum Theory will feature enough new gameplay to draw in the average shooter fan, but you've got to hand it to Tecmo/KOEI for at least giving it a shot. Quantum Theory lands in stores next month for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
