The Evolution of Fitness

This year at E3, you couldn’t swing Richard Simmons around your head without hitting an exercise game. Though they all had their own unique catches and approaches, Your Shape: Fitness Evolved stood out from the pack.

UbiSoft offered a first glance at Your Shape during its press conference. Though it looked like another “me too” fitness game at first glance, it quickly won me over as something different. At one point, fellow staffer Matt (Fridtjof) and I commented on how Your Shape would spell the demise of the ass grooves years of stationary gaming helped shape.

Using Microsoft’s Kinect, Your Shape scans your body, offering a good readout of your body type. From there, it uses the information to help shape your workouts. Once scanned, the game will watch your every move and offer helpful feedback. It will tell you that your knees aren’t bent enough on a particular move, or if you need to improve your posture. Small things, but they can mean all the difference between a lousy, painful workout and a great one.

When beginning a routine, the game asks players to input their goals. From there, the game will determine which fitness program will work best for their condition and goals. As players get better, and hopefully in better shape, the game will make changes to the program based on results from a fitness test.

Beyond typical workouts found in other fitness games, Your Shape offers up both yoga and Tai chi as ways to help improve your balance. Similar to workouts, the game will constantly monitor your movements to make sure you’re in the right position and offer advice on how to improve. All instruction is provided by an on-screen trainer, who walks you through exercises.

Many gym exercises involve more “game like” activities. In one exercise, blocks appeared on the screen. The goal was to hit each as they lit up, breaking them. It looked fun and was one of the core reasons I’m sold on a Kinect. Though not on display, Your Shape also features family-focused mini-games like dancing and target practice.

Your Shape also plays host to a community fitness portal. You’ll be able to keep track of all your data and even have a look at how friends are doing. For me, this is another exciting feature simply because of the motivation meta-game that could potentially spring up.

Your Shape: Fitness Evolved hits stores this Fall alongside Microsoft’s Kinect.
