Hoarding Bananas Never Felt So Right

Nintendo knows how to stir up a frenzy. Nintendo announced that Retro Studios (Metroid Prime series) will be making a new Donkey Kong game for the Wii. Donkey Kong Country Returns is the name of the new game and as the title suggests, the series is returning to its platforming roots and banana collecting tendencies. (And before you ask... no, Donkey Kong Jungle Beat does not count.)

An evil group of Tiki masks have taken over all the animals on Donkey Kong Island and raided DK’s Banana Hoard. DK is very stingy about his Banana Hoard and sets out to get back what is rightfully his through all new side-scrolling levels that are very reminiscent of the Super Nintendo classic.

Everything from barrel cannons to K-O-N-G bonuses are present with a new role for DK’s partner, Diddy Kong. Diddy Kong returns (without Dixie) and he brought along his jetpack and peanut popgun to help DK out in a pinch. For the first time in the series, two players can play at the same time and Diddy Kong can piggyback onto DK for deviously tricky areas.

Everything that made the original great is here: mine cart levels, hidden items, puzzle pieces, a fantastic soundtrack and gorgeous graphics. All of these things could make Donkey Kong Country Returns the most important Nintendo game this year.
