When most people hear the phrase “in-browser MMO,” they typically think of something you would find on Facebook, but Bigpoint has something else in mind, especially with their latest license, Battlestar Galactica Online.

The BSG MMO takes an EVE Online approach focusing on the ship-to-ship aspect of the series rather than running around as humans or cylons. This means that most of your time you will be dogfighting your way through space. Of course, dogfights aren’t going to be all BSG MMO plans to offer, you will also have various quests and mining missions.

The game takes place during the show’s second season when most of the drama of the series still involved the constant cat-and-mouse chase between the humans and their robotic creations. This season of the show also introduced a second Battlestar into the mix, The Pegasus, so we can only hope that those interactions will eventually become events in the MMO. As far as the general structure of the game along with character creation and leveling, none of that was revealed at this time, but we hope to hear much more about the details of the game as we get closer to its Winter release.

Going into my appointment with Bigpoint, I have to say I was a bit skeptical about a browser-based MMO with the BSG name attached to it, but that was before I realized that Bigpoint was building the game based on the Unity Engine which, among other things, allows them to develop a fully-featured 3D game and deploy over the browser, thus making it extremely accessible for users. When I walked out of the both though, I was completely sold on the game, which isn’t all that hard since it is planned as a free-to-play MMO with micro-transaction revenue. Stay tuned for a full review in the future.
