One Semi-Evil Preview

If you haven’t read Bryan Lee O’Malley’s Scott Pilgrim books, you’re missing out. Seriously, I’m not kidding – they’re that good. I’m tempted to tell you to stop reading now and check them out, but then there’s no guarantee you’ll come back now, is there?

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game is based off the upcoming Edgar Wright directed film of the same name. The plot of both the game and movie follow loveable loser Scott Pilgrim and his attempts to woo Amazon.ca courier Ramona Flowers. It seems Ramona is pretty into Scott as well, but in order to win her hand, Scott must first take on the Seven Evil Exes, a Legion of Doom type group made up of Ramona’s evil exes.

Gameplay resembles something between River City Ransom and Battletoads. The sheer whiff of Battletoads-like gameplay was enough to get me interested, the fact that it’s Scott Pilgrim only makes it that much better. It’s also rather fitting that the PSN adaptation would follow in the footsteps of classic brawlers considering the number of geek throwbacks found in the books.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World features four playable characters from the books: Scott and Ramona, as well as Scott’s band mates Stephen Stills and Kim Pine. The game can be played either solo or four-player co-op and presents a playful approach to gameplay. You’ll spend time bashing your way through minions and taking part in wild moments ripped straight from the books. You’ll take shortcuts through subspace and even fend off hipster-chucking Evil Ex, Matthew Patel. It sounds odd, but everything fits within the Scott Pilgrim universe perfectly.

Each character has a unique set of moves to unlock as you play through the game. Adding to the RPG elements, you can also spend money on snacks to further enhance each character’s stats. There are also plenty of weapons to pick up in levels, ranging from snowballs to bats, as well as special team-up combo attacks between players. It’s an old school brawler in every way possible.

It’s unlikely Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game can live up to every expectation fans will place upon it. But, based on what Ubisoft has shown so far, they’re headed in the right direction.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game is scheduled for release this August as a PSN download.
