The Impending Storm

We got a chance to get some hands-on time with Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 2, and from our brief experience, it looks like this game will be just as good as its predecessor, and will make significant enough changes to stand out on its own.

Ultimate Ninja Storm 2 will feature more than 40 playable characters, many of which will be new to the Storm series since the first game covered the original series, and this one kicks off the Shippuden storyline. Exactly how far into that second series Ultimate Ninja Storm 2 goes couldn’t really be said at the time, but we can probably expect it to at least cover the Gaara Rescue arc. This means we should not only see some of the more adult versions of our kid heroes, but also Akatsuki members like Sasori and Deidara and new friendlies like Yamato and Sai.

The fight we got to play through was Naruto and Sakura’s attempt to nab the bells from Kakashi’s belt. With the tag-team feature of the last game, your secondary character can jump in when you command he or she to deal some damage, but this new game also allows the helpful character take some of the damage off of you as well. What was really interesting about the fight was the fighters’ ability to really use the environment. This was really obvious when Kakashi turned the arena into a lake with islands and used his Chidori to electrify the water, as well as send a Water Dragon jutsu at you. While these semi-scripted events might deter some hardcore fighter fans out there, I felt like it made the game feel just a bit closer to the show and it will probably keep things exciting longer.

If the demo I got to play this year is any indication of what’s to come, then I can’t wait for Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 2’s release this September on both the PS3 and 360.
