Not Your Parent's Chess

What do you get when you take a modern Chess engine like that found in Fritz 11 and put it in the hands of the developers who made X-Blades? You get a game that will let you tackle the various intricacies of the strategic board game, but with gameplay modes and multiplayer capabilities that modern gamers should really appreciate.

Battle vs. Chess gives you 10 different themes to put on your board and lets you play the game in rich HD graphics. But besides the standard chess gameplay found in Fritz 11, you can play through tons of chess puzzles that require you to know how the different pieces move intimately in order to solve.

Another intriguing aspect of Battle vs. Chess is the "Battle" side of things. While in "Action Mode," you will no longer see the pre-animated attacks that occur when one piece goes to take a square from another. Instead, the two players will get thrown into an arcade-style fighting game to determine who will possess the square. This aspect of the game reminded me a lot of the LucasArts game from a few years back, Wrath Unleashed.

As an added bonus, Battle vs. Chess will feature multiplayer modes for both local players and online. As you might expect though, the number of players tops out at two.

Battle vs. Chess will be coming out for the Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, PC, Macintosh, DS and PSP this Fall, so those gamers out there looking for a new chess challenge should keep an eye out for this game.
