No License, No Holds Barred

What happens when a bunch of developers who specialize in fighting games get fed up with the restrictions of licensed products and the politics of the companies that own said licenses? Obviously, they break off, form their own company and make a new fighter that doesn’t have any of those restrictions.

That’s exactly what happened to form Kung Fu Factory, and what led to the announcement of a new, non-licensed mixed martial arts game simply named Supremacy MMA. Being published by 505 Games, Supremacy MMA was only announced mere days before the E3 show floor opened up, and while the developers claim the fighting game to be only 35% finished, what they have already looks impressive.

The demo showed two fighters, one specializing in Karate, and the other in Muay Thai, and as the two clashed, the difference in styles was readily apparent, and it became obvious that the developers at Kung Fu Factory are trying to be as realistic as possible. While neither the game’s roster nor the full list of martial arts styles could be discussed, it was revealed that many of the developers in the studio are trained in several styles and their expertise will be used to make the game as realistic as possible.

In fact, that’s the whole drive of the game. It seems that Kung Fu Factory feel that the MMA games of the past have been a bit too sterile and haven’t portrayed some of the darker sides of the sports as much as they would have liked. In Supremacy MMA, you will take your fighter from the underground rings and illegal arenas around the world in order to build up your reputation before being able to make your way into the more professional tournaments. According to the demo team, this was one of the main points they wanted to make, and could only make if there wasn’t an official license or name attached to the game.

The developers couldn’t reveal too many details about the final product at this time, but they have promised more information in the next few months. Look for more news soon about this exciting new Xbox 360 and PS3 fighting game.
