Splatterhouse Makes a Splash

Based on the 1988 beat-em-up of the same name, Splatterhouse places the player in the shoes of Rick Taylor, a regular college student who finds himself and his girlfriend, Jennifer, seeking shelter during a storm in a creepy old mansion called West Manor, owned by the mysterious Dr. West, a crazed scientist who has been performing all sorts of wicked experiments. When horrific monsters burst out and decimate Rick, leaving him for dead and carry Jennifer off to a fate worse than death, fate intervenes. One of Dr. West's acqusitions, the Terror Mask, having fallen into a pool of Rick’s blood, reawakens a sleeping demon and makes a deal with Rick. The Terror Mask will save his life and help him rescue Jennifer if he dons it, but he is transformed into something not quite himself in doing this and becomes a hulk of a man able to rend creatures into two, but one capable of rescuing his beloved.

As Rick battles monsters with over-the-top combos and weapons, including chain saws, 2x4’s and even the limbs of the same monsters he is killing, the Mask feeds upon the spilled blood and becomes more powerful. It can heal Rick when he gets hurt or give him more aggressive attacks. He has special moves called Splatterkills which provide the player with an ultra-gory cinematic of their glorious kill. The screen will go black and white and become very, very bloody, allowing Rick to obtain the maximum amount of blood from his kill, thus making the Mask a happy camper. As Rick gets injured, you can see his body show wear and tear, but that is putting it lightly since you can see the degradation of muscle and bone. But just the same, as you absorb blood and begin to heal, you can watch his body repair itself in real time. Wicked! The character of Biggy Man will return from the original game and you can expect plenty of goopy gore to please even the most bloodthirsty of players. Personally, I am not the squeamish type at all, but some parts of this game even made me say, “Ewww.” Look for Splatterhouse to burst onto 360’s and PS3’s everywhere this Fall.
