Dance Till You're Dead

Tired that is ... dead tired... oh come on, it wasn’t that bad.

Oh well. If you still happen to be reading this article, then let me tell you about Majesco’s bid in the dance game genre. Zumba Fitness uses the new motion-based controls for the PS3 and Xbox 360 (as well as the Wii, but that’s not new), to get you off of your couch and dance yourself fit.

Zumba Fitness will guide you through the nine different dance styles: Reggaeton, Merengue, Salsa, Cumbia, Hip-Hop, Mambo, Rumba, Flamenco and Calypso, all in an effort to make you “forget you are even exercising.” Your dance sessions will take you through 30 different routines and will be lead by Tanya Beardsley, Gina Grant and the creator of Zumba, Beto.

From what we saw during the Zumba Fitness demo (no, I personally didn’t step out there and dance), it looks like the game is pretty responsive. The demo we saw used the 360’s Kinect and the basic mechanics of the game have you watching the silhouettes on the screen and matching their movements as they shimmied and shook in place. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to see the PlayStation Move or Wii-motes in action for this game, but I would imagine the Move wouldn’t be all that different. The Wii, on the other hand, might be another story altogether. I just can’t see how you can get that level of motion data when you are just holding a Wii-mote or two.

Zumba Fitness will be released later this year. It will be interesting to see how these different dancing games will do against each other, especially if they require the new peripherals instead of just having them as a secondary form of input.
