Mirror, Mirror...

One of my favorite parts of E3 is the re-discovery that goes along with new game announcements. Every year, I discover a game that either served as inspiration in one-way or another, or a new release in a franchise that makes me want to go back and try previous games. This year’s candidate is easily Castlevania: Lords of Shadow.

Although I gave the first game a go back in 2010, it didn’t connect for me. My guess is the game was a victim of poor release timing, but for whatever reason, I never went back. The unveil of both the console release Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 and 3DS tie-in, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate has me excited to go back and give the game another go.

Before venturing any further, a warning: The follow contains a major spoiler from Castlevania: Lords of Shadow’s ending, so if you don’t want the secret ruined (as it was for me), skip the next paragraph and following story trailer.

SPOILER

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate is set roughly 25 years after Gabriel set out to kill Dracula, only to give into the darkness and become a vampire. The 3DS game will act as a bridge of sorts between that game and its console sequel and focuses on Trevor Belmont, who is sent by the Brotherhood of Light to end Dracula’s reign. Oh, by the way, Gabriel is also Trevor’s father, so expect some fun daddy issues to bubble to the surface.

END SPOILER

In addition to Trevor, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate will also feature Simon Belmont, though details on how this works out weren’t released. Additionally, Konami has just revealed that fan-favorite Alucard will also be a playable character.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate returns the series to its 2D roots and offers a giant open-ended castle. Much of the gameplay seems to be built around exploration and puzzle-solving, though you’ll also get into a couple of scuffles along the way. Combat sees to be pulled directly from the console releases, resembling something more akin to God of War. As you defeat enemies, you’ll earn experience points, though instead of leveling Trevor’s attributes, you’ll unlock new combos and combat abilities.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate doesn’t have an exact release date, but expect it sometime this Fall. Until then, enjoy the game’s E3 2012 Story Trailer.
