No Arms. No Legs. Two Screens.

UbiSoft is making it really hard to not at least consider picking up a Wii U. Among its other interesting offerings for Nintendo’s new system is Rayman Legends, a follow-up to the excellent Rayman Origins that uses the Wii U’s GamePad to add even more multiplayer fun.

Every year, there’s one buzzword that seems to dominate E3. This year that word is “asynchronous gameplay,” meaning everyone is playing the same game and working towards the same goal, but contributing in his or her own way. In Rayman Legends, that “different way” involves players controlling Murphy, a bug-like character using the GamePad’s touchscreen. As other players run through the level using Rayman and friends, the player controlling Murphy can interact with objects in the level to open new sections or aid in solving puzzles.

UbiSoft also showed a mode where the GamePad wielding player needs to hit prompts in time with music while other players charge through the level as quickly as possible. The catch is these prompts only appear on the touchscreen, so the other players don’t know when they’re coming.

On the other side of gameplay, Rayman Legends looks gorgeous and should provide the same high-level of platforming found in Origins. The addition of the touchscreen player just makes it that much more appealing.
