A Continuing Mission

When the J.J. Abrams reboot Star Trek film came out back in 2009, there wasn’t much noise made about it in the videogame industry. In fact, I believe the only title associated with that game was a Xbox Live game, Star Trek: D-A-C. With the sequel to that film scheduled for release sometime in 2013, it seems that Namco/Bandai and Digital Extremes are planning on releasing a game that takes place in the new Star Trek timeline.

Actos like Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto have already agreed to reprise their roles as Captain James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock. Meanwhile, other members of the Enterprise crew like Lieutenant Uhura (Zoe Saldana), Scotty (Simon Pegg), Bones (Karl Urban), Sulu (John Cho) and Chekov (Anton Yelchin) will at least have their likenesses in the game, though it is unclear if any of them are also lending their vocal talents to Star Trek.

Unlike many Star Trek games that focus on ship-to-ship combat or adventure-based away teams, this one is a third-person shooter with a lot of focus on co-op between Spock and Kirk as they and The Enterprise face a new threat in the blood lust and war-hungry Gorn.

For those of you only casually familiar with Star Trek, if you’ve ever seen a picture or footage of Kirk wrestling with a man in a green lizard suit - that’s a Gorn. This race hasn’t shown up too frequently in the TV shows, much less the movies, but it looks like this game is going to go a long way to define their culture.

For this game, the Gorn are described as a race that seems bent on destroying all other races. Star Trek will depict them as a military dictatorship comprised of warriors of different classes that each have their own fighting styles, and to make matters worse, they have venom that can do everything from poison, induce hallucinations or even kill their enemies. The classes that have been revealed include Rushers (basic infantry), Warriors (fighters), Brutes (tanks), and then there are the females that seem to like climbing on walls.

Star Trek is going to be released on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC early next year, but you can stay up to date and join the growing community by going to www.startrekgame.com.
