Rainbow Six Reborn

I remember hearing about Rainbow Six: Patriots when it was announced. It was a thematically-risky venture; terrorism committed on American soil by Americans for the American ideals that they embody? It wasn't just farfetched (even by shooter standards), it was uncomfortable. Granted, that's what they were going for, but the entire game is not meant to be, it seems. Instead, it looks like we're going to get something all new, but just as ambitious.

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege will have a single player component, but it is strongly multiplayer-focused. The meat of the experience is in the Sieges themselves. Enemies will have the ordinance and the wherewithal to transform their environments into defensible fortresses while Rainbow Six teams attempt to breach them.

Ubisoft's Realblast engine seems to be taking a page from DICE; destruction is a big deal in this game, and factors such as bullet caliber, shot angles and amount of explosives used are taken into account. As a result, the game world is procedural in nearly every aspect of its existence, and routes can be created the old fashioned way -- with explosions.

We'll leave you with some words from the game's creative director Xavier Marquis: "As fans of Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six and tactical shooters in general, we set out to create the game we always wanted to play within the counter-terrorism universe. We asked ourselves 'how could we capture the incredible tension and unique tactics of these confrontations?' We found the answer in the Siege gameplay and procedural destruction. Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege is the game that Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six fans have been waiting for, and first-person shooter players will be drawn to its unique gameplay."

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege will be out next year for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Whet your appetite with this gameplay reveal video.
