Raven Squad will blend the FPS and RTS genres in a fairly fluid and seamless manner.
Taking place deep in the Amazon jungles (in the not-too-distant future), you will be controlling two different, four-man teams of paramilitary troopers who are simply trying to get out of the jungles alive. At first glance, Raven Squad looked like a small-scale RTS game where you got to move your troops in a bird's-eye view, and, when necessary, take direct control by telling them to throw grenades or use certain abilities. But with a simple tap of a button, you will zoom into one of the eight soldiers (based off of the currently selected squad member).
From there, you can help your team in a much more direct manner by fighting head on. Each character also has a secondary ability (besides the primary machine gun [with unlimited ammo I might add]), that is everything from standard grenades, to flash bombs or sniper rifles.
In the demo I played, I took one team down a road and into a clearing where they needed to defend themselves while I switched to the other group and helped to clear out an area not too far beyond Alpha Team's defensive point. Once that camp was cleared out, I left Bravo Team at their exit point, and helped get Alpha to their goal. The great thing was that I didn't really have to go down to first-person view, I could have handled the entire mission from RTS mode, or even leave it up to the game's A.I. Since it seems to do a pretty good job of controlling your squad members when you aren't in direct control.
Raven Squad will also support a multiplayer co-operative campaign. It's the same story as the single player game, but the tasks can be split to allow each player to control a single team. |
