Fallout 3: Mothership Zeta

Genre: First Person Shooter/Action

Introduction:

Well, I guess you can say that Bethesda has finally come full circle with its fifth and final piece of downloadable content for Fallout 3, Fallout 3: Mothership Zeta. After reliving the Battle of Anchorage, venturing into the slave-trading capital of "The Pitt" and exploring the redneck swamps of Point Lookout, Mothership Zeta takes you high above the Capital Wastes for a linear, sci-fi themed adventure on an alien spaceship.

Mothership Zeta is everything you would expect from something involving an alien abduction. Like other DLC, it all begins with a mysterious radio signal leading you to the crashed UFO where you recovered the Alien Blaster in the original game. After inspecting the wreckage, you are surrounded by a strange light...

Gameplay:

You wake up locked in a cell with another Wastelander. She's no happier to see you than you are to be an alien test subject, but having you around lets her devise a plan to get out. After busting out of prison, you run across a little girl with way too much knowledge about the ship (apparently the little girl is better at getting out of her cell than your cellmate) and various people frozen in cryo chambers. Together you decide to take down the ship's crew and escape.

Remember how I said Mothership Zeta was a "full circle" for Fallout 3? Similar to Operation: Anchorage, Mothership Zeta is a linear shooter, once again building on the game's weakest elements. The entire four-hour experience consists of walking through tight corridors blasting aliens and robots. If the FPS part of Fallout 3 was good, this would be a must-have experience, but it isn't.

To its credit, Mothership Zeta starts out in a really interesting place. Fresh out of your cell, you're forced to make do with whatever alien technology you can scrounge up. Beating back aliens with little more than a stun rod and uniform I was able to pilfer from a body was fun. About 10 minutes into your escape, you find all your old equipment and things go from interesting to dull. I see why you get your gear back, but couldn't it have come AFTER you complete your mission on the ship? With the type of hardware you're likely packing by now, you would think the aliens would see it as a trophy, not as something you throw in a box 10 feet away from the prison block.

Mothership Zeta also removes most instances of choice. Outside deciding to not shoot alien workers, I can't think of many tough decisions I had to make and the one choice I did make lacked the sort of payoff I would expect. Missions goals aren't very compelling either. Other than the final climactic (but lackluster) battle on the bridge of the ship, all you're really doing is blowing up power generators. Basically, its everything you would expect from "Generic Sci-Fi Shooter 3" and not Fallout 3.

Difficulty:

I have to admit, I was the architect of my own demise. Between Broken Steel and Point Lookout, my armor took one hell of a beating. Were I a smarter player, I would have repaired and stocked up on equipment before investigating the signal, but I didn't. The result: my first DLC death.

Mothership Zeta is recommended for characters level 25 and up. The aliens are tough and there are a lot of them. When you factor in the tight corridors, there isn't much you can do but charge in and fight. If you've been relying on the Tesla Cannon and Alien Blaster to get out of tough situations, the new set of space-age weapons will quickly humble your once dominant play-style. The Alien Blaster is still a beast, but the new alien rifle can quickly take down aliens, especially if you've put a lot of skill points into Energy Weapons and V.A.T.S.-related perks.

Value:

If you didn't like Operation: Anchorage, you'll hate Mothership Zeta. The two pieces of DLC are far too similar and hold up the game's worst aspect while ignoring its best aspects. It offers some really cool set pieces and isn't a complete waste of time. At the same time, for a last piece of DLC, I was expecting something a little more epic or worthy of the 100+ hours I've sunk into the game.

Fallout 3: Mothership Zeta is recommended only for players who want to see everything Fallout 3 has to offer or like the game's gunplay. Otherwise, you can ignore it and not miss out on much.
