Roll Cage
Score: 70%
Developer: MadCatz

Function:

It looks like a dental appliance, but it really is the portable equivalent of an off-road rollbar for your Game Boy Advance. Flexible, purple rubber and 2 stiff stainless rods make up this really strange piece of hardware. Strange, but cool, as it turns out. The Roll Cage protects your GBA from some of life's minor mishaps.

Performance:

I really had no idea what this thing would do until I strapped it on. Looking at it in the package, you're not quite sure what, where or why. What it does is protect your GBA at those times when it's in a backpack or on a table, and you don't want something rubbing against the screen on on the buttons. Where it fits (and picture this), is around the GBA, snugging into the slots on top and molding around the curves of the body. When it is finally in place, the two bars run top to bottom across the sides of the screen. And that's outside the display, in case you were wondering. Why you would want this when there are other completely adequate storage and protection devices on the market really depends on taste. Although putting this on means the GBA isn't quite as portable as it was to being with, the look of the Roll Cage is IMO a cool look. And, I do stash mine in a bag from time to time, so it's a nice way to protect without the bulk of a case.

Features:
  • Simple, idiot-proof design
  • Stainless steel bars with form-fitting rubber skin
  • Protects the GBA screen and body from bumps

Drawbacks & Problems::

The main issue you might have with Roll Cage is if you invested some money and fell in love with a carrying case or protection device for the GBA. Really, it's either one or the other, so be prepared to take off Roll Cage for those times when you absolutely need to store it in a case. And, even though you can drop your GBA equipped with the Roll Cage in a backpack without fear of harm, there isn't any place on this piece of hardware to store a game cart. Space is provided to change games, but the 'single-use' quality of Roll Cage may make it a novelty item for most gamers. Still, it's a neat idea, and scores well in my book for originality alone.
