Function:Sometimes in life, things don't do much except look pretty. The Twin Skin Pack from Mad Catz is just such an item. It is a set of two decorative 'skins' for the Game Boy Color that, in gold and silver, make a nice tie-in for the Pokemon games of the same color. At least, that's one possible use. Other skins from Mad Catz are black, white, red, blue, yellw, green and a red-on-white pattern. While covering the GBC, these skins don't get in the way of any vital ports or buttons, and keep a low profile. They're thin but very noticeable, especially in the gold and silver variety. |
| Performance:Putting these things on a GBC is like falling off a log. Basically, each skin is a plastic shell with a rail on each side that fits under the 'lip' on each side of the GBC. It doesn't require any fasteners and stays flush without being too bulky or hard to remove. As I said, all the ports, including earphone jack and EXT, are left open through the design of the skin. Clearance for buttons and D-Pad is fine, although not much in the way of an add-on device will work when a skin is in place. |

Drawbacks & Problems::Although all the frequently used and important elements remain exposed when the skin is added, Start and Select were somewhat hidden. As little as you need these in a game, I can't imagine it to be a real problem, but that's really the only critical comment I can make. There's nothing terrible or problematic about the Twin Skin Pack except that it doesn't really have a functional use in the GBC gaming world besides letting you play Pokemon Silver on a silver GBC. And, this may be exactly what you've been looking for. It definitely meets my criteria for 'what to give the gamer who has everything,' and who said pretty things have to be useful? Now, if only more useful things could be pretty... ;) |
