Adrenalin Pedal Free Wheel
Score: 70%
Developer: Saitek

Function:

Saitek's Adrenalin Pedal-Free Wheel for the Xbox comes with two paddles on either side of the device, positioned behind the wheel. These serve as the gas and brake for most driving games, and map to the left and right triggers seen on standard controllers.

The full compliment of controller functions are present, including the A, B, X, and Y buttons, the BACK and START buttons, as well as the directional pad and black and white buttons. The unit includes a clamping device, which seems to work well on most surfaces. It can also be used on your lap.

Performance:

The Saitek Adrenalin Pedal-Free Wheel is a very solidly built device. It feels good in your hands, especially when clamped to a desk or table top. This reviewer found it difficult to keep positioned in his lap, though, and it is frustrating to use in this manner.

The wheel's 10 ft cord is especially nice, making it much easier to find a comfortable location to position it in. The unit includes vibration feedback support, which works fine, although it would be nice if it provided a little more feedback than it does.

Some games seem a little touchy with the unit, including Test Drive, but this same problem seemed to be true with other wheels as well. Even with touchy games, it wasn't hard to get used to controlling the cars with the wheel. The real downside of the wheel is the 'pedal free' design, though. For this reviewer's small hands, the paddles were just too far away from the wheel, so it was a real strain to use them.

Features:
  • Gas and brake paddles
  • Desk and lap adaptors
  • Vibration feedback
  • 8-way D-Pad
  • Digital Start and Back buttons
  • 10 ft. cable with in-line disconnect

Drawbacks & Problems::

Overall, I would not recommend this wheel, at least not without first trying it yourself. It could be that users with bigger hands will find it a better fit than I did. However, having used this particular Saitek product, I wouldn't hesitate to try the version of the Adrenalin Wheel that includes pedals. Maybe that's a winner?
