Advanced N64 Controller
Score: 100%
Developer: MadCatz
Device Type: Controller

Function:

Mad Catz seems to have a thing about rubber coating their controllers. God bless them. The Mad Catz Advanced Controller not only fits well in the hand, but feels good enough to stay there a while. The button layout, D-pad and analog stick are pretty much the norm, but the middle handle has a unique shape, making it feel more like the handle of a gun than the original controller. This seems to make sense when you consider there?s a trigger down there. The controls are easy to reach, and they all respond well and have a good feel to them. The Mad Catz Advanced Controller is mechanically very sound.

The Mad Catz Advanced Controller is very similar to the original N64 controller, so the only thing that you have to get used to is the fact that it?s comfortable. It does have a Slow feature, but I?m relatively sure no one out there ever uses this feature since games almost always have a series of options you can choose from when a game is paused, and the slow features simply bounce between pause and un-pause. There is also a Turbo fire feature you can set on your different fire buttons. The turbo button is placed in the center area of the controller, where it is easily accessed, but not accidentally so. If you want to use the Turbo feature, you?ll find it easy to set and clear. But the comfortable design is the real selling point on this controller. And for that, the learning curve is exactly zero. Just enjoy.

Performance:

I haven?t really liked the design of the original N64 controller, and was hoping for a third party hardware company to design a controller that really broke the mold, and was completely different than the original N64 controller. Instead, Mad Catz has shown that the N64 controller can be done right. With rubber coatings in just the right spots, an ergonomic design that perfects the original idea, and a durable, well thought-out design, Mad Catz enters the ring with a contender that is most definitely, ?Advanced.? You will tire of the game you?re playing before you tire of the controller you?re playing it with.

Features:
  • Floating D-pad Design
  • Large Z-button Trigger
  • Bigger Center Grip with Better Design
  • Tactile Rubber Grips for Enhanced Comfort
  • Turbo Fire Mode
  • Slow Mode
  • Cord Length: 6'6"

Drawbacks & Problems::

Mad Catz knows what they?re doing. Their affinity for rubber coatings always makes a more comfortable controller. If anything, I would have liked to see them coat more of the grip area with the rubber, namely the top of the handles. But as it stands, the Mad Catz Advanced Controller is very nicely designed and constructed, with no real drawbacks or problems to mention.
