Ultra-Link Cable
Score: 85%
Developer: MadCatz

Function:

One of the neat things about the GBA is that it plays old GBC games as well as GBA games. So, not only do you get access to a new library of games, you can also enjoy your old ones as well. But what about all those great GBC multi-player games? Since the old link cables don't work with the GBA, should you be left out of the fun for stepping up to the GBA before anyone else on your block? No, just pick up a MadCatz Ultra-Link Cable.

Performance:

The Ultra-Link Cable is a little different from other cables. The first noticeable thing is that instead of being one long cable, it splits off into a 'Y' shape at the hub. Using the cable is easy. If you're linking to a GBA, you flip the switch on the hub to GBA and plug in the GBA connector. If you're linking to a GBC, then simply put the switch on GBC, plug the GBC connector in and get to playing.

I noticed very little difference in this cable when compared to others. It's long (about 7 feet) and durable. The connections have a very snug fit, but at the same time are easy to pull out when you're finished playing. The Ultra-Link Cable also includes the always-handy Velcro tab that helps keep the cord nicely coiled when not in use.

Features:
  • 7 feet in length
  • GBA and GBC connectors
  • Hub for multi-player games
  • Velcro tab to keep cable neatly coiled for travel
  • Play against GBC and GBA owners with one cable

Drawbacks & Problems::

The Ultra-Link Cable has very few drawbacks that keep this from being a good investment. My main complaint was that when you're playing with one cable plugged in, the other just dangles there. I'm sure with creative use of the Velcro tab, all kinds of solutions can be thought of, but it still adds a bit of uncomfortable weight to the cord and risks damaging the unused connector. I noticed a tiny bit more lag time with this cable than I did with others, but nothing to make things un-playable. As for the GBC games, they ran pretty well, although there were slight 'hiccups' with some games, but again - nothing to worry about.
