Blob Light
Score: 60%
Developer: Nyko
Device Type: Accessory

Function:

Nyko, as most Game Boy Color owners know, solved a big problem with the Worm Light. We were all thrilled at the color improvement to the original Game Boy, but man was that screen dark! And it still is... So, with a handy little accessory that plugged into the EXT port, Nyko illuminated the Game Boy Color. The Blob Light functions as a Halloween version of the Worm Light, or maybe just a Worm Light that fell into a vat of gene-fizzling goo. Instead of the slim profile Worm Light had, Blob Light looks like a four-eyed monster crouching on top of your GBC. It shines down from the top and adjusts by bending the main eye-stalk, which contains the light. The whole device is made of rubber or latex, and contains some flexible rods that retain shape. So, as the directions say, the Blob Light molds to fit your GBC, and with time and adjustment will perch on there like it was surgically attached. The light is pure and white, and not only helps bring out the action and color on-screen, but also powers directly from the EXT port.

Performance:

Nothing about the Blob Light is delicate, although I wonder what constant bending and adjustment will do for the life of the light. Nyko recommends you remove Blob Light after using it or when storing the GBC, so it may not be as sturdy as it feels on first examination.

Fitting this thing to a GBC is like trying on Cinderella?s slipper. I noticed that with some bending before I put the thing on, I was able to get a tighter fit, but there?s plenty of adjustment once the light goes on, or you?re playing blind. Having such a bulk makes the Blob Light more prone to be in the way of your game than the Worm Light ever was. After some time, you?ll figure out where it needs to go, but there?s nothing intuitive about it.

Features:
  • Powers from EXT port on GBC
  • Clean white light makes games stand out, even without additional light-source
  • Funny ?monster? motif and colorful look goes well with GBC

Drawbacks & Problems::

I love my carrying case and Game Boy Color protective case, but you won?t be able to use either one with the Blob Light. The substantial footprint this thing makes will rule out 90% of the protective cases (if not all) and make it impossible to use other peripherals like magnifiers. This bugged me, but if you?re using your GBC in the nude, a Blob Light might even dress it up a little (heh).

I can?t say that there?s much motivation to buy this over the Worm Light, unless you?re just in the mood for a funny new look for your GBC. Once the novelty wears off, there?s nothing functionally new about Blob Light, but I can imagine younger kids will eat this thing up. It?s cute... could a rubber Pok?mon be far off?
