PowerHandles
Score: 100%
Developer: Thrustmaster
Device Type: Power

Function:

The PowerHandles do two important things: they add PlayStation-style ?handles? to the Game Boy Color, and they act as a battery pack. The battery pack is the important thing -- batteries are expensive! But the fact that they double as nice grips is very nice too.

Performance:

Simply pop off the battery cover of your Game Boy Color, take out the batteries, and snap the PowerHandles in. You?ll want to charge it if you don?t want to play while attached to an A/C adapter, but that?s a simple leave-it-plugged-overnight ordeal. You can charge it while plugged to the Game Boy as well, which is nice if you?re a lazy bum that doesn?t want to detach it.

After snapping it in and charging it up, you simply use your Game Boy Color like you would normally. Only now it has two handles, one on each side, for easy use. I always had problems with holding my Game Boy for extended periods of time, but these solve that, err, handily.

The functioning is perfunctory. There are even places on the back where your pointer fingers can rest, which I didn?t really notice until I looked. It?s definitely ergonomically designed, and since you?re no longer holding onto the angular Game Boy, but instead rounded handles, you?ll find your gaming experience to be more conducive to extended playing times.

And, fortunately, the batteries keep up. I?ve been using the same charge for a long time now, and it shows no sign of waning. You can play with the A/C hookup directly, if necessary, but the times between charges are great enough to not need to bring multiple battery packs on long car trips and whatnot. The PowerHandles are quite nice.

Features:
  • ?Battery pack? feature that replaces your batteries with rechargeables
  • Extended charge batteries take a long time to wear down
  • Handles make playing on the Game Boy Color more comfortable than ever
  • Ergonomic design keeps hands from cramping during extended sessions of Metal Gear Solid
  • The set I got matches my lovely Atomic Purple GBC perfectly

Drawbacks & Problems::

Uh... you have to charge it... occasionally. (Power supplies need that sort of thing.) I suppose that?s a limitation, but...

Well, you won?t be able to use this with something like the Shock ?n? Rock, but that?s understandable -- that?s a battery pack thing too. It would have been nice to have ?rumble? action with the handles, but as they are, they?re extremely lightweight. And since you now hold it like a game controller instead of like a Game Boy, it?s important to minimize the weight.

In a nutshell, the PowerHandles rock. Perhaps not literally, but I can say that it?s never leaving my Game Boy Color.
