Intelligent Remote 360
Score: 81%
Developer: Nyko
Device Type: Accessory

Function:

Got more remotes than hands? Tired of turning on your 360 and then wondering where your TV remote is? Enter Nyko's Intelligent Remote 360. This remote is designed to stylistically complement the 360 and is a full featured Learning Remote, capable of learning what signals to send to control your TV directly from your old TV remote.

Performance:

In the end, once the Intelligent Remote 360 is programmed, it works very well. The signal is strong and response is good and quick. However, while the Intelligent Remote 360 is not difficult to program, the process is a bit time consuming. Following the instructions, you have to indicate that you want to train a button, depress the button you want to train, and press the button that you want "copied" from the other remote with it pointed into the Intelligent Remote 360's receiver. Against, this is not in any way a complicated process, but these steps must be repeated for each and every button you want to program for your TV. (The 360 controls are already installed and are not modifiable.)

This system does offer some flexibility, however. Since the Intelligent Remote 360 simply receives the signal sent to it and sends that signal when you press the programmed button, you could actually choose certain controls from multiple devices and pick and choose which ones to mimic with the Intelligent Remote 360. For example, you could have your entertainment system set up so that you turn channels using a VCR or external TV Tuner, change the volume on a sound processor or surround sound system and also want to be able to turn your TV on and off. Instead of using a remote for each of these devices and another one for your 360, you can program the Intelligent Remote 360 to send the volume signals expected by your sound processor, the on/off signal expected by your TV and the channel signals expected by your VCR or external TV Tuner. The 360 controls, as mentioned above, are pre-programmed.

I found the programming to be a bit tedious and a bit more complex than I would have preferred, but I do appreciate the flexibility provided by having each button separately programmable.

Features:
  • Back-lit Buttons
  • Automatic Setup
  • Built-in "Smart Function"
  • Independently Programmable Buttons
  • Designed to Complement the Xbox 360
  • Xbox 360 Controls are Pre-programmed

Drawbacks & Problems::

The only complaint I could have about the Intelligent Remote 360 would have to be the method of programming the buttons. Again, this is not so much a design flaw as a trade-off, allowing much more flexibility when needing to use it with multiple devices. If you're looking for a remote to control the standard controls that a TV would need along with your 360, this could be a good remote for you. However, if you're looking to simplify your setup and you have your sound controlled by one device, your channels by another and your TV's power by the TV itself, this is an excellent choice for you.
