Step Brothers finds Nancy Huff (Mary Steenbergen, Elf) and Dr. Robert Doback (Richard Jenkins) falling madly in love after meeting at a medical convention. After a whirlwind romance, they hesitate to admit that each has an embarrassing little secret - they both have 39-year-old, unmarried, spoiled sons living at home. Imagine their happy surprise to know they are both have this in common! When the "boys" meet, that's when the real fun begins.
Once they marry, Brennan Huff (Will Ferrell) doesn't take too kindly to having to move into Dr. Doback's home, and Dale Doback (John C. Reilly, Walk Hard, the Dewey Cox Story) completely resents the intrusion of Brennan and his mom. As the two lay down house rules, which are guaranteed to be broken, they realize that they are very alike, but completely hate one another. To make matters worse, Brennan's brother Derek (Adam Scott), super-successful real estate mogul and friend to the stars, continually makes him look like a fool. What's more, Derek's mousy wife Alice (Kathryn Hahn) decides that she has the hots for Dale and pursues him at family gatherings.
Dr. Doback's dream has always been to retire onto his boat and to sail around the world. Now that he and his lovely wife share this dream, it can finally become a reality. They decide to sell the house and with this decision, Dale and Brennan must make something of their lives and get jobs, so they can move out on their own. Dale and Brennan don't want their "idyllic" and lazy lives shattered, so they work to prevent the sale of the house. But the boys and their nonsense eventually takes a drastic toll on the marriage and Dr. Doback and Nancy decide to divorce, devastating the boys. Their aspirations shattered, Brennan and Dale straighten out their lives in the hopes of reuniting their parents, with hilarious results.
Step Brothers: Unrated is absolutely hysterical. I laughed far more than should be legally allowed, however this unrated version has a full 8 minutes of additional footage, some of it pretty raunchy. While the theatrical version is included, this movie is pretty raw anyway, so be advised. Although clearly fake, there is a scene where Brennan molests Dale's drum set and it was a little shocking.
Special features are plentiful and uproariously funny including a gag reel, commentary, deleted scenes and some typically Ferrell/Reilly featurettes that are sure to please fans. There are also a lot of scenes that were seen in the movie, but redone in many different ways for the special features. While they are funny, they won't please everyone. I don't know if this is one to buy, but its great adult comedy and any fan of Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly and/or Judd Apatow should check this movie out.
